Fundada el 1951 per 11 associacions nacionals de fisioteràpia com a Confederació Mundial de Fisioteràpia, la Fisioteràpia Mundial representa ara més de 600,000 fisioterapeutes a tot el món a través de les seves 128 organitzacions membres.

Nova constitució
A new constitution is unanimously approved at the 19th general meeting in Geneva in May 2019. Delegates at the meeting also approved a motion on climate change, a policy statement on diversity and inclusion, and an endorsement of ethical principles of health care in times of armed conflict and other emergencies. Three new subgroups were also approved: Organització Internacional de Fisioterapeutes Aquàtics (IOAPT), Federació Internacional de Fisioterapeutes que treballen en Salut i Ergonomia Laboral (IFPTOHE)i Fisioteràpia Internacional per al VIH / SIDA, Oncologia, Hospici i Cures Pal·liatives (IPT-HOPE).
