Background: Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) often have structural changes in your muscles, progressing to inactivity in the activities of daily life. The inactivity in CPOD long-term oxygen therapy users (LTOT) may be associated with a decrease in functional performance.

Purpose: Verify the association between the physical activity in daily life (PADL) level with functional performance in patients with COPD LTOT users.

Methods: Were evaluated 21 patients (8 men; 68±8,9 years; VEF1 27±10,8%pred). The PADL was assessed by the Human Activity Profile (HAP). To evaluate the functional performance was used the Timed up and go test (TUG) and 6-minute step test (ST6). Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism 6 program.

Results: Moderate correlation was found between HAP and TUG (r= -0,53; p= 0,01), e HAP and TD6 (r= 0,67; p= 0,0008).

Conclusion(s): The level of PADL directly influences the functional performance in patients with COPD LTOT users.

Implications: Patients with CPOD oxygen therapy dependent in Brazil have difficulty to perform physical activities, because the oxygen concentrators are very heavy and cylinder refills with high cost. So it is extremely important to encourage physical activity for this population to prevent reduce the functional performance, leading to a worsening of symptoms. This professional should be a physical therapist able to handle the optimal amount of oxygen while performing the exercise.
