Sri Lanka: World PT Day 2025

College of Physiotherapists

The College of Physiotherapists of Sri Lanka successfully held a national programme  to celebrate World  PT Day 2025 at the Colombo National Hospital Auditorium with the support of the government of Sri Lanka . The chief guest at this event was the Minister of Health, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, a powerful minister in the Sri Lankan government.

A number of lectures by doctors were held on the role of physiotherapists in healthy ageing. 

Over 200 physiotherapists from all parts of the country participated in this program. At the end of the program, they were awarded 10 CPD points and a certificate.

News about this program was broadcast on all television channels and newspapers in the country.

It was announced in all media outlets that, as per the instructions of the World Confederation of physical therapy , public awareness programs will be held on this year's theme, Healthy Aging.

Physio Life Care, Sri Lanka, marked World PT Day 2025 under the theme: Healthy Ageing – Prevention of Falls and Frailty through Physiotherapy

Introduction

World PT Day 2025 was celebrated under this year's theme “Healthy Ageing: Prevention of Falls and Frailty through Physiotherapy”. Physio Life Care Sri Lanka joined this international movement with a series of educational, clinical, and community-focused programs designed to raise awareness about the importance of physiotherapy in promoting healthy ageing, preventing falls, and managing frailty among older adults.

Objectives of the programme

  • To raise public and professional awareness of the role of physiotherapy in healthy ageing.
  • To educate older adults and caregivers on fall prevention strategies.
  • To promote physical activity, safe mobility, and independence in ageing communities.
  • To advocate for physiotherapy as a key healthcare service for ageing populations in Sri Lanka.

Program overview (1 August – 8 September 2025)

During this period, Physio Life Care Sri Lanka organised a range of activities reaching communities across multiple regions:

Twelve workshops

  • Focused on fall prevention, frailty management, exercise for elders, balance training, and safe home modifications.
  • Conducted for community elders, sports groups, office workers, and caregivers.

Four sports and wellness activities

  • Adapted physical activities for older adults.
  • Included balance and coordination games, walking competitions, and fitness challenges designed to promote active ageing.

Eight media presentations

  • Television and radio talks, YouTube sessions, and social media campaigns.
  • Topics included: the importance of exercise for healthy ageing, physiotherapy’s role in fall prevention, nutrition for frailty, and success stories from patients.

Highlights and achievements

  • Reached over 2,500 participants directly through workshops and sports events.
  • Indirectly influenced more than 25,000 individuals via media awareness campaigns.
  • Empowered elders and caregivers with practical strategies to reduce fall risk.
  • Created collaborations with local health organizations, community centres, and elder societies.
  • Showcased physiotherapy’s central role in extending independence and quality of life in ageing populations.

Conclusion

The World PT Day 2025 programme by Physio Life Care Sri Lanka was a remarkable success, spreading awareness and practical knowledge on fall and frailty prevention. The initiative reinforced physiotherapy’s role as a vital healthcare service for healthy ageing and made a meaningful contribution to the global campaign.

University of Colombo

The Physiotherapy Students’ Welfare Society, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo organized the “Colombo Physiotherapy Week - 2025” to celebrate the World PT Day 2025.This year events were conducted from 2-8 September 2025, in line with the World Physiotherapy theme "Healthy Aging – Focusing on Preventing Falls and Frailty." The series of events highlighted the crucial role of physiotherapy in the optimization of independence, functional ability and quality of life in older adults.

The event series of the Colombo Physiotherapy Week 2025 comprised of the following.

2 September

  • Inauguration Ceremony
  • Undergraduate Workshop on "Falls Prevention and Frailty Management in Older Adults"
  • International Webinar on “Geriatric Physiotherapy, Healthy Aging: Post-Stroke Musculoskeletal Health and Fall Prevention"

3 September: Physiotherapy Clinic including treatment for various conditions and free balance, body composition, and posture assessments.
 
4 September: A Multidisciplinary Team Discussion on “Preventing Falls and Promoting Independence in Older Adults"
 
6 September: International Webinar on “Capacity Building in Healthy Aging and Geriatrics” and “IT’S WAMI3! Sri Lanka and a Wellness Aging Module”
 
7 September: Public Awareness Programme & Webinar on “Falls and Frailty Prevention"
 
8 September: International Webinar on "Exercise for Fall Prevention in Older Adults"

The objectives of the event were to:

  • celebrate World PT Day 2025.
  • promote awareness of the contribution of physiotherapy to healthy aging.
  • educate the public and undergraduates regarding falls prevention and frailty management in older adults.
  • facilitate inter-professional collaboration in geriatric care.
  • generate professional pride and interest among physiotherapy undergraduates
