PHYSIOTHERAPY AT THE CROSSROADS OF AGEING, DEMENTIA AND FALLS PREVENTION
Outline:
This seminar is chaired between the International Association of Physiotherapists working with Older People (IPTOP) and the International Organization of Physical Therapy in Mental Health (IOPTMH). This will cover various aspects of ageing, dementia and falls prevention, including research evidence on physiotherapy interventions and modification of treatment based on cognitive, behavioural challenges and mental health conditions. A case study will be used to illustrate the concepts covered and facilitate discussion.
Objectives:
- The evidence supporting falls prevention practices for those living with dementia based on the recently published World Falls Guidelines (2022)
- What physiotherapy interventions are effective for falls prevention in people living with dementia
- How physiotherapy intervention can be modified to optimise participation in rehabilitation after taking into account cognitive function and behavioural issues, as well as mental health conditions
