Purpose:

To determine the contribution of physical activity and physical performance in reducing the risk of falls in community-dwelling elderly with T2DM

Methods:

The participants comprised 94 fallers and 250 non-fallers who identified a number of falling for a past year. Physical activity and physical performance included muscle strength of lower limb, balance performance, endurance, and fall-efficacy were identified as the association to falls and adjusted by age.

Results:

The low lower limb muscle strength, dynamic balance, ability to stand on foam with open and closed eyes, and fall-efficacy with high concern about falls category associated with falls strongly after adjusted by age (p0.05). The low lower limb muscle strength and dynamic balance increased fall five-fold, while fall-efficacy with high concern about falls category increased fall for four-fold after adjusted by age in community-dwelling elderly with T2DM.

Conclusion(s):

Improving low physical performance can reduce falls and enhance the ability to carry out functional activities in community-dwelling elderly with T2DM.

Implications:

The rehabilitation of physical performance needs to be addressed regularly to reduce falling in community-dwelling elderly with T2DM
