THE CONCURRENT VALIDITY OF MOBILITY ASSESSED WITH THE ABILOCO-TURKISH SCALE AND ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH BALANCE

Background: Mobility problems are frequent complaints after stroke and are associated with quality of life. Since the methods used to evaluate mobility include movement and activity, they are difficult to apply, especially in the acute period. Some technological systems are very expensive. Therefore, the use of questionnaires makes clinical evaluation practical. ABILOCO is also a valid, reliable, easy, and practical questionnaire for the evaluation of mobility.

Purpose: This study aims to investigate (examine) the validity of ABILOCO-Turkish, and its correlation with balance.

Methods: One hundred twenty (120) people with stroke were included in this cross-sectional study (N:120; 77 male, 43 female, Age: 61.74± 11.64 years). A demographic information form, the Mini-Mental State Test (MMST), and the ABILOCO questionnaire consisting of 13 items were completed by all participants. Each item was scored as: possible (1) or impossible (0). The Timed Up and Go test was used to analyze the validity of the ABILOCO-Turkish questionnaire. Balance was measured with the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). All measurements were performed by the same physical therapist.

Results: Concurrent validity was assessed by calculating the Pearson correlation between ABILOCO-Turkish and the TUG test. Pearson correlation coefficient was too high (p<0.001, r=-,807). And also, ABILOCO-Turkish test scores were excellent correlated with BBS scores (p<0.001, r=,934).

Conclusions: ABILOCO-Turkish is a valid and basic measurement for assessing mobility. ABILOCO-Turkish results were correlated with balance. (BBS scores) The ABILOCO which provides the opportunity to evaluate mobility easily and cheaply, is closely related to balance and its Turkish version is also valid.

Implications: ABILOCO-Turkish is an easy and valid questionnaire that can be used both in research and clinical practice to assess mobility.
