Purpose:

To describe a structured approach to use behavior management strategies to enhance performance level outcomes in rehabilitation protocols.

Methods:

This platform session will use the TP of the UE CIMT as a model for using behavior management to promote UE performance in the home and community setting. After providing the theoretical basis for the intervention approach, each TP strategy will be described and examples provided.  Research designed to specifically examine the influence of the TP elements on performance outcomes will be presented. Finally, examples of performance enhancing behavior management strategies, used as part of other rehabilitation interventions will be explored.

Results:

The TP of the UE CIMT protocol has been used extensively in clinical and research settings. Strong evidence suggests that these strategies promote more-affected UE performance in home and community settings following stroke.

Conclusion(s):

Behavior management strategies have promise for improving performance-level outcomes in rehabilitation programs. One model for achieving these results comes from the TP of the UE CIMT protocol.

Implications:

With the TP of the UE CIMT protocol as a model, similar behavior management strategies can be developed to enhance other rehabilitation protocols.
