Background: Musculoskeletal injuries of the wrist/hand joint complex are common, causing pain
and dysfunction, having Physiotherapy a prominent role in their treatment. The Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation score (PRWE) was developed as a self-reported measure to assess pain and function in musculoskeletal pathologies of this joint complex.
and dysfunction, having Physiotherapy a prominent role in their treatment. The Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation score (PRWE) was developed as a self-reported measure to assess pain and function in musculoskeletal pathologies of this joint complex.
Purpose: To culturally adapt the PRWE to the Portuguese language and to test its reliability,
validity, responsiveness and clinical significance.
validity, responsiveness and clinical significance.
Methods: Development of the Portuguese version of the PRWE through translations, back
translations, consensus panels and pretest. The Portuguese versions of the PRWE, QuickDASH and VR-12, a form of sociodemographic and clinical data and a subjective scale of perception of change were administered to a sample of 150 participants (mean age: 54.57 years; 66% female).
Results: The reliability of the PRWE was good: Cronbachs alpha of 0.89 (pain subscale) and 0.95 (function subscale and total PRWE). The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), at two days of retest interval, were 0.81 and 0.88 for the pain and function subscales, respectively. The total PRWE presented an ICC of 0.87. Construct validity: it were observed positive, and moderate to strong correlations with the QuickDASH (between 0.66 and 0.81), and negative and weak correlations with the domains and summaries of the VR-12 (r between -0.25 and -0.50). After the physiotherapy treatment period (three to four weeks), moderate to large effects were found for the standardized effect size (between 0.68 and 0.77) and the standardized response mean (between 0.70 and 0.81), and values of Minimal Detectable Change between 11.8 and 21.2.
Conclusion(s): The Portuguese version of the PRWE presented good psychometric characteristics
in terms of internal consistency, reproducibility, construct validity, responsiveness and clinical significance.
Implications: Promote and provide outcome measures to the Portuguese physiotherapists.
