Background: Winnnick and Short designed the Brockport test in 1982 to assess the physical fitness of 3,500 children aged 10 to 17 years with and without hearing, visual, and physical disabilities in the United States (Winnick and Short, 1982). In 1984 the authors selected items for the UNIQUE project, which did not they required equipment and developed in a short time (Winnick and Short, 1984). In 1985, the first version of UNIQUE was published, to evaluate physical fitness for the health of young people with disabilities. After some studies of validity and reliability, the first version of the Brockport was published in 1999 (Pitteti, Femhall and Winnick et al, 1998). The second version of 2014 has elements of the fitnessgram. Actually, cross-cultural adaptation processes have not been carried out in the Spanish language and there are no reference values for the Colombian population either. Therefore, in the Colombian context, it is necessary to adapt the test to know the physical fitness of the population and generate intervention strategies based on adapted physical activity.
Purpose: The objective is to carry out the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Brockport Test for the characterization of physical fitness in children and young people with intellectual disabilities in the city of Bogotá.
Methods: Validation study with a quantitative approach, which determines the adaptation of the test and its applicability in the population with intellectual disabilities in Bogota. It has the following phases:
1. Translation into Spanish. Official translation with terms used in Colombia, with the prior authorization of the authors of the test.
2. Review and adjustment by researchers.
3. Translation of the document in Spanish into English.
4. Review by expert peers as the first validation phase. From the review we obtain data that were systematized to later determine the agreement measures between experts, using Kappa and W Kendall.
Results: The translation and re-translation of the Brockport test was done, which were carried out by 2 official translators who had no contact during each of the processes. The documents in both Spanish and English were reviewed by the researchers to ensure the understanding of the information for professionals in the area. After this, the evaluation formats of experts were built which included a scale likert for the dimensions pertinence, sufficiency and relevance. This format together with the documents were sent to the peers who made the review, finding acceptable levels of concordance and satisfactory concepts of the experts, with suggestions that were considered in the final document. This document will be tested through a pilot test.
Conclusion(s): Conclusions: From the perspective of the experts the Bockport Test is a valid tool within the Colombian context, to be applied in a population with disabilities, because it includes includes universal constructs that can be adapted to the local condition.
Implications: This study offers physiotherapists an instrument that will allow prescribing the exercise and the physical activity promotion in a population with disabilities, according to their condition and needs.
