CROSS-CULTURAL TRANSLATION TO SPANISH AND FACE VALIDITY OF THE PHYSICAL THERAPIST STUDENT EVALUATION: CLINICAL EXPERIENCE AND CLINICAL INSTRUCTION

Background: Evaluating clinical experience is an essential element of physical therapy programs, as it contributes information for the learning process, offering pedagogical feedback as well as learning self-regulation. In Colombia, the use of tools to evaluate the development of competences in students is fundamental in physical therapy programs; however, there is no evidence on a national level of questionnaires to evaluate the student's perception in relation to the clinical experience. The Physical Therapist Student Evaluation: Clinical Experience and Clinical Instruction, developed by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), provides a voluntary focus and it is consistent and uniform so that students can evaluate the clinical instruction and general clinical experience. Therefore, permission was requested to carry out the transcultural translation and adaptation process to Spanish, for later use in Physiotherapy programs in Colombia.

Purpose: To perform the cross - cultural translation to Spanish and evaluate the face validity of the Physical Therapist Student Evaluation: Clinical Experience and Clinical Instruction.

Methods: Translation from English to Spanish was realized following a standardized translation and retrotraduction protocol in accordance with international recommendations for adaptation of questionnaire by certified translators. A group of experts was selected to evaluate the instrument´s semantic, idiomatic and cultural equivalence.
For face validity, last semester students enrolled in the Physiotherapy Program at Universidad Industrial de Santander were selected to determine clarity, pertinence and relevance of each item in the Spanish language version of the questionnaire. A report detailing the findings and corrections to the tool was written.

Results: A group of experts evaluated the translation and equivalence of each item of questionnaire, obtaining a pre-final version, to which facial validity was performed with the participation of 26 practice students from the Physiotherapy school at Universidad Industrial de Santander, who determined the clarity, pertinence and relevance of each item. It was considered that 81% items were clear, pertinence and relevant and the rest were adjusted, obtaining the final version of the instrument in Spanish.

Conclusion(s): The Spanish version of PT-Student is culturally appropriate to evaluate clinical experience and clinical instruction of Physiotherapy students´ clinical practice. Authors recommend evaluating the psychometric properties of content validity and reproducibility, test-retest of the tool, before its application.

Implications: Implementing this tool by universities offering physical therapy undergraduate programs, enables feedback in the learning process, contributes to physical therapists´ formation and enables meeting the required quality standards of Colombian physical therapy´s instruction Programs.
