The study aimed to calculate the disease burden of stroke in Bangladesh between 1015 and 2023 for patients receiving rehabilitation.
This was a cohort retrospective observational study of stroke participants who received rehabilitation services at the Centre for Rehabilitation of Paralysed (CRP) in Bangladesh between 2015 to 2019. 431 samples were selected by simple random sampling and all data were collected through telephone interviews by using a semi-structured research question technique.
Among the 431 respondents with a mean age of 58.68 years, there were 105301.98 DALYs due to years lived with a disease or premature death, and the DALYs for men were 52055 and females were 9674.76. The numbers of YLLs and YLDs over this period were 103692.0 and 1554.54 respectively which indicates a high mortality rate and we found an overall mortality rate of 23.0% and alive 77.0% but most of the participants 39.7% moderate to severe disability and disability gradually increased over the years after the stroke occurrence.
Everywhere in the globe, including Bangladesh, the burden of stroke is growing frequently. The study found that YLL is higher than YLD and that indicated a very high mortality rate and in comparison, to the general population, a stroke shortened a patient's life expectancy.
This study help to early detection, affordable treatment options, and rehabilitation services can significantly alleviate the impact of stroke in Bangladesh. It also enhances healthcare practices and informs effective health policy decisions.
