Background: Eccentric exercise is looking forward to become an effective therapeutic strategy for people who are exercise intolerant. However, the effects of eccentric cycling on erythrocyte rheological characteristics and anaerobic metabolism related with anti-oxidation are unclear.
Purpose: This study investigates whether the eccentric or concentric training at matched-power output influence rheological capacities by modulating metabolism status of erythrocyte in sedentary men.
Methods: Thirty-nine healthy sedentary males were randomly assigned into either CCT (concentric cycling training, n=13) or ECT (eccentric cycling training, n=13) for 30 min·d−1, 5 d·wk−1 for 6 wk at 60% of Workloadmax or to a CTL (control group, n = 13) that did not engage in exercise intervention. A graded exercise test (GXT) was performed before and after the intervention. Rheological and metabolic characteristics were determined by an ektacytometer and a UPLC-MS, respectively.
Results: During training sessions, compare with CCT, the ECT had lower levels of RPP, SBP and HR. However, both interventions have manifestly improved aggregation and deformability of erythrocyte, and which were highly related to the changes of senescence markers, CD47 and CD147 and ROS status. In metabolism analysis, an up-regulation glycolysis after either CCT or ECT was evidenced by steadily decreased glucose coupled with increased G3P and lactate. Simultaneously, the enhanced pentose phosphate pathway flux was also dominated with a maintained GSSG/GSH level after the GXT.
Conclusion(s): Either CCT or ECT enhances the early anaerobic glycolysis to active the Pentose phosphate pathway, thus the enhanced anti-oxidation capacity can quickly respond to the stress from acute GXT, then improving aggregation and deformability to lead the elevation of cardiopulmonary fitness.
Implications: Although the augmentation of aerobic capacity is less in the ECT, however, it is still having lots of advantages on functions of erythrocytes. Therefore, we strongly recommend people who has less exercise tolerance to take Eccentric Cycling Training.
