Background: Pressure ulcers have both personal and socioeconomic repercussions, becoming a public health problem where the economy of institutions that provide health services is affected. The reported prevalence of pressure ulcers worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is between 5% and 12%, in the Americas it is 7%. Mexico in 2011 was the first National Study of Prevalence of pressure ulcers, resulting in a prevalence of 12.92% that places it at a medium level with respect to other countries such as Spain and Germany, whose prevalence ranges from 6 to 13%.

Purpose: To determine if the educational intervention of the physical therapist in the prevention and rehabilitation of pressure ulcers in prostrate patients will decrease the risk factor of acquiring them.

Methods: A study of quasi-experimental, descriptive type, with cohort design and follow-up of cases was carried out applying the Braden scale, which was carried out in H.G.Z No 71 Veracruz of the IMSS. The selection of patients was made through the application of the Braden scale, for stratified convenience. The population studied was 20 primary caregivers of prostrate patients with risk of pressure ulcers, during the months of September 2015 to January 2016.

Results: A significant decrease in the level of risk of pressure ulcers was observed in 18 patients (90%) after educational intervention of the primary caregiver. The analysis showed a significant increase in the evaluation parameters of the Braden scale in the areas of humidity, mobility and friction and sliding. The Humidity category had a great increase in the qualification, the initial average was 1 and the final was 3. In the Mobility we observed the initial average of 1 and the final average of 3. The Friction and Sliding item showed a considerable increase in the qualification, presenting the initial average of 1 (50%) - 2 (50%) and the final average of 3.

Conclusion(s): Education aimed at primary caregivers has allowed us to reduce the high risk level from 80% to 0% of the population studied. The analysis showed a significant increase in the evaluation parameters of the Braden scale in the areas of humidity, mobility and friction and sliding.

Implications: Early identification of pressure ulcer risk level, patient education and primary caregiver, reduces the risk of pressure ulcers in patients with high risk.
