Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of different physiotherapy methods on pelvic floor dysfunctions in women after childbirth.

Methods:

The method of scientific literature was used in this study. This work aimed to find out the effect of different physiotherapy methods on pelvic floor dysfunctions in postpartum women. The literature review was conducted by analyzing such scientific databases as – BMJ, NCBI Bookshelf, PubMed, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, Springer Link, Taylor & Francis Online, Wiley Online Library. A total of 185 sources of scientific literature were examined, all publications were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria of scientific sources.

Results:

The main treatment methods of pelvic floor dysfunctions after childbirth are pelvic floor muscles strengthening by Kegel exercises, stretching exercises, endurance training, aerobic exercises, diaphragmatic breathing exercises, hypopressive training, therapeutic water exercise, transvaginal electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, magnet therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy treatment of urinary incontinence, biofeedback therapy, Knack maneuver, manual therapy, weighted vaginal cones, yoga and Pilates. Treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions with a combined treatment method, using different physiotherapy methods at the same time, such as pelvic floor muscle strengthening with Kegel exercises combined with biofeedback therapy and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation allows to achieve better results in the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions than using different treatments methods individually.

Conclusion(s):

After analyzing the sources of scientific literature, the most common dysfunctions of the pelvic floor in women after childbirth were found: urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, chronic pain syndrome, sexual dysfunction. Most of the examined treatment methods have a positive effect on the treatment of pelvic floor dysfunctions when they are chosen purposefully, when women consult with doctors and when a physiotherapist teaches coordinated pelvic floor muscle activity.

Implications:

To ensure greater dissemination of information about the types of pelvic floor dysfunctions, their causes, symptoms, preventive and therapeutic measurements. This can be done by handing out informative leaflets at the treatment centers. Managing risk factors can help reduce the likelihood of pelvic floor dysfunction6.
