Background: Menstrual pain is a common symptom in 34-90% of women who menstruate regardless of race. Among these symptoms of menstrual pain, back pain is the third most common which rate as they age Also increases. This study is necessary because it is judged that it will help to identify back pain and muscle structural changes during menstrual period through spinal stabilization exercise and stretching, manage it in a non-drug method, and reduce the discomfort of daily life.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the effect of lumbar stabilization exercise on pain, muscle morphology and quality of life in women with chronic menstrual back pain.
Methods: Twenty eight women with chronic menstrual back pain were randomly assigned to the lumbar stabilization exercise group(n=14) and the stretching exercise group(n=14). Both groups exercised three times a week for 10 weeks and 30 minutes per session. To compare the results, pain was measured using Visual Analog Scale, Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging was used to measure muscle thickness. Futhermore, Oswestry Disability Index was used to quantify disability for low back pain, and SF-36 was used to measure the quality of life related to health.
Results: Lumbar stabilization exercise group significantly reduced back pain in group, time, interaction than stretching(p<.05). Muscle thickness was significantly increased in group, time, and interaction during the rest period of external oblique muscles compared to stretching(p<.05). In the internal oblique muscle, there was a significant increase in time and interaction at rest(p<.05) and significantly increased with time in the systolic muscle thickness minus diastolic muscle thickness(p<.05). Abdominal muscles showed significant increase in group, time, and interaction at rest(p <.05). Multifidus significantly increased muscle thickness with time in both sides at rest(p<.05). On the Oswestry Disability Index, lumbar stabilization exercise group significantly decreased than the stretching group in time and interaction effects according to exercise type(p<.05), and in SF-36, physical function, vitality, physical pain, general health significantly increased.(p<.05). Role limitations due to physical health problems, role limitations due to emotional problems, and significant increased in both group, time and interaction effects in mental health and social functioning(p<.05).
Conclusion(s): This study was conducted To find out the effect of stabilization exercise in lumbar spine on pain, muscle structure, and quality of life in women with primary menstrual pain with back pain during menstruation.
As a result, spinal stabilization exercise reduced back pain in women with primary menstrual pain. It was confirmed that it is effective in improving muscle thickness and quality of life. Therefore, back pain during menstruation For women, spinal stabilization exercise reduces pain, increases muscle thickness and life span. It could be suggested as a treatment that can improve quality.

Implications: It was confirmed that the lumbar stabilization exercise is more effective in improving pain, muscle structure, and quality of life in women with chronic menstrual back pain. The results of this study are expected to provide long-term exercise programs to women with chronic menstrual back pain without side effects due to drug use, and to be used as data to control back pain.
