Background: Ankle chronic functional instability is the most important consequence of inversion sprains settles after one or more sprains and is defined as the tendency of the ankle feel instable during some functional activity.
Purpose: Evaluate the influence of MWM (Mobilization With Movement) and taping after it, referring to pain and functional performance of subjects with ankle functional instability.
Methods: This study is a randomized clinical trial that was conducted in the Universo (Brazil). The questionnaire of Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) was used to identify if the subjects had ankle functional instability. There were included on the 46 subjects divided into 3 groups: Group A (MWM with rigid tape), Group B (MWM with elastic tape) and Group C (Placebo doing some small movements with the ankle). The procedure was divided into two stages, the first stage (T1) the Visual Analogic Scale (VAS) was applied after the Y balance test; and the second stage (T2) the VAS and the Y balance test were performed after the intervention with the MWM and the Tape application. After 48 hours with the tape, the subjects were reassessed with the VAS and the Y balance test, first with the tape (T3) and after that without the tape (T4). For the statistical analysis here was adopted the significance level of p 0,05, comparing the difference between times and the analyzed groups.
Results: The sample was consisted of 46 subjects with 16 on the Group A, 15 on the Group B and 15 on the Group C. The age average was 23.26 (±5.96) and body mass index of 22.84 (±2.92). The pain evaluation comparison intra-group had no significant difference on group A (p=0.02) using Friedman test. However as the data were not parametric, were used the Post Hoc test, with pain before the first Y balance test (T1) and after 48 hours (T3) with the tape (p=0.041), also comparing T1 and T4 (p=0.023). So there were no significant differences for these variables measured, because the statistical level for a significant value of p on Post Hoc test should be >0.01. For the Y balance test, using the ANOVA test, comparing the groups and intra-groups with repeated measures, there was no significant difference in the improvement of this functional performance.
Conclusion(s): We conclude that the application of MWM followed by rigid or elastic tape does not reduce the pain and functional performance, having similar effects to the placebo group.
Implications: The findings of the study suggest that the effect on pain and instability cant be showed with the MWM using the tape, with no difference between the tape rigid or elastic. The effects are similar to placebo. All the subjects already had functional instability, which does not rule out the increase in pain and functional deterioration during the study hypothesis that has not occurred. We suggest further studies with more specific methodologies and evaluations, larger samples, acute sprains and higher post therapy time.
