Background: Pregnancy causes many changes in woman´s body. As the consequence of the enlarging uterus, increasing body weight during pregnancy may also be swelling of the lower limbs. Lower limbs edema is one of the most common complaint in pregnancy. These complaints significantly affect the well-being of pregnant women and make their daily functioning more difficult and limiting their physical activity Determination of serum concentrations of MPO, MMP-1, IL-6 can be a good predictor of the development of inflammation. Kinesio Taping method is effective and safe treatment which can be used in pregnancy, but still it doesn´t have good reliable and objective research which show how it really works.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the effectiveness of Kinesio Taping - application using the lymphatic technique and the effect of the treatment on the interleukin - 6, myeloperoxidase and metalloproteinase - 1 concentration in blood serum in the treatment of lower extremity edema in pregnant women.

Methods: Selected inflammatory mediators as MMP, MPO and IL-6 were measured in women healthy in the third trimester of pregnancy and those who have experienced idiopathic edema of the lower limbs.
The changes in concentration: MMP-1, MPO and IL-6 were analyzed in serum of 37 healthy pregnant women between 36 and 40 weeks of gestation, and 38 pregnant women who developed edema of the lower limbs which has implemented as treatment lymphatic drainage by Kinesio Taping application. We checked the concentrations of mediators and circumferences of the lower limbs measured in cm on the first day before the application of KT tapes in study group. Than we checked biochemical parameters and lower limbs circumferences at the next day and the day after. The Kinesio Taping therapy in study group last 3 days. In control group we checked inflammatory mediators concentrations in the same periods of time.

Results: The mean concentrations of IL-6, MPO and MMP-1 were higher in the study group in comparison with healthy pregnant women. The mean concentrations of MPO, IL-6, MMP-1 were higher for women after Kinesio Taping application. After 3-days of physiotherapy program edema measured by lower limbs circumferences were smaller.

Conclusion(s):
1. Therapy using the lymphatic technique of Kinesio Taping lead to changes in the concentration of inflammatory mediators such as IL-6,MPO, MMP-1 in relation to the status before treatment.
2. Application of Kinesio Taping in pregnancy reduces lymphatic edema improving the quality of life and daily functioning of patients.
3. KT is safe and acceptable treatment method which can be used in pregnant women.

Implications: In the study, the effectiveness of the therapy was shown in an objective manner by using the assessment of the concentration of inflammation mediators and changes in the measurement of linear limb circumferences.
