This study aimed to determine EI of undergraduate physiotherapy students and identify association between EI and variables such as year of study and academic performance.
A cross-sectional study was conducted at KUSMS among undergraduate physiotherapy students. EI was measured using the Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 where ANOVA was used to determine the association between EI and year of study; and Pearson test was used to assess the correlation between EI and academic performance.
A total of 102 participants were included, of which 86% were female. The mean EI score was 125.64 indicating average score. Fourteen percent of participants had high EI, eighty percent had average EI while around five percent had low EI.
The study indicated that most of the undergraduate physiotherapy students at KUSMS had average EI. There was no statistically significant relationship of EI with year of study and academic performance.
The results indicated that most of the students have average EI, which means they are good at regulating one's and others' emotion. In addition, the students also can manage their education and learning well as they would be motivated and be better at stress management. Furthermore, such studies can be conducted in other physiotherapy education institutions in Nepal. Also as it is well known that EI can be trained; the physiotherapy students should be provided with the required training which would bolster their confidence and morale and help the institutions produce efficient and competent physiotherapists.
