Background: Adhesions in peritoneal cavity are usually the remaining effect after a surgery. A significant number of patients experience persistent pains, most commonly found in the abdomen, abdominal distension, gas and stool retention, and intestinal peristalsis disorders. One of the methods of treating patients with LBS may be the use of Kinesiology Taping (KT).

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effects of KT in patients with LBS.The patients taking part in the study were referred by the Gastrology Clinic in Nysa.

Methods: The randomized study included patients (41 ♀ , 19 ♂ , age 48,85) with lazy bowel syndrome (LBS) caused by adhesional obstruction after surgical operations within abdominal cavity. In the BA group, Kinesiology Taping (KT) was used to improve intestinal transit and reduce pain levels. In the KO group, placebo applications were used.
The study evaluated the intensity of pain, duration of abdominal pain episodes and the number of bowel movements (defecations) during a day as well as stool formation according to the Bristol scale. The study also used a set of diagnostic criteria (SIGECAPS) to help diagnose the symptoms of depression. During the study, the patients did not take pharmacological agents.
In physiotherapy of patients from the BA group, KT applications were used for external oblique abdominal muscles on the left side, internal oblique muscles on the right side and fascial in the liver area. In patients in the KO group used applications did not affect the physiotherapy process.

Results: In the evaluation of the results of the study, Friedman´s analysis of variance was used to verify the variability between the study and the post hoc analysis proper to it, testing the significance of differences between individual studies. Separate comparative analysis between groups (U Mann-Whitney test) was used for each study. Because of the so-called the "alpha accumulation effect" for multiple comparisons to the test result, Bonferroni correction was taken into account and the significance of the difference for the assumed level was determined (p = 0.05). The materiality score including this amendment was presented as a Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons.

Conclusion(s):
  1. Statistically significant effects of KT application in pain reduction and normalization of the digestive process were demonstrated in patients in the BA group.
  2. Statistically significant reduction in the level of depression in patients in the BA group was found compared to patients in the KO group.
  3. Statistical difference was found in the effects of pain reduction and normalization of the digestive process between patients from the BA and KO group.

Implications: It can be assumed that KT is one of the methods of complex treatment of patients with LBS.
