This scoping review summarizes current educational standards and guidelines for OncPT and examines their implementation across global PT programs.
A comprehensive scoping review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Medline. Literature published from 2014 to 2024 was searched with keywords like "oncology physical therapy," "oncology physiotherapy," "educational standards," and "curriculum." The search adhered to PRISMA-ScR guidelines for systematic identification of relevant studies. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed articles, guidelines, and reports related to educational standards in OncPT for both entry-level and post-professional programs. Key findings were presented using tables and charts for clear visual representation of data and trends.
Ten studies met our inclusion criteria from an initial pool of 30. The findings highlight significant gaps in OncPT education across entry-level PT programs, characterized by limited published competencies or specific standards and inconsistent oncology-related content. This variability results in inconsistent preparedness among graduates. Although current PT curricula frequently emphasize the lymphatic system, the overall scarcity of dedicated oncology courses indicates a pressing need for curriculum enhancement. The review also reveals disparities in post professional OncPT education worldwide; while the US has made considerable strides in establishing specialized training and certifications, Europe faces a critical need for standardization and formal education in oncology rehabilitation. Similarly, Canada’s limited number of certified specialists presents opportunities for growth.
This study highlights the crucial role of OncPT in improving patient rehabilitation and quality of life, while also exposing significant deficiencies in educational standards within PT curricula. There is existing literature, however the depth and breadth of CA rehabilitation is poorly elucidated in the curriculum and standard of PT education program.
There is a need to develop and implement clear standardized educational frameworks for both entry-level and post-professional OncPT practitioners. Establishing these standards will better equip clinicians, educators and researchers to address the unique challenges of CA care, while also promoting consistency and quality across the field.
