Background: Traffic accidents are considered a public health problem because they are responsible for a high mortality rate worldwide. On the other hand, it is known that a large proportion of survivors suffer serious injuries that could generate some type of disability.

Purpose: Determine the factors related to the dependency and participation of people with disabilities due to traffic accidents in Cali-Colombia.

Methods: Cross-sectional-analytical study endorsed by the ethics committee, carried out from the Registry for the location and characterization of people with disabilities of Cali-Colombia between 2005 and 2017. The relationship of Dependence and Participation with sociodemographic factors, structural deficiencies and contextual barriers was analyzed through regressions multivariate logistic to estimate adjusted Prevalence Ratios (PR).

Results: Of the 23,798 records, 959 corresponded to people with disabilities. Of them, 39% (95% CI: 35.9-42.1) had Functional Dependence, 86.7% (95% CI: 84.5-88.8) Restriction in Labor Participation and 33% (95% CI: 29-36) in Participation in Education.
Functional dependence was higher in people without monthly income (PR = 1.25 95% CI: 1.05-1.49), with ≥2 deficiencies in body structures (PR = 1.55 95% CI: 1.31-1.83) and in those who perceive personal barriers (PR = 1.29 95% CI: 1.08-1.54) and environmental (PR = 1.43 95% CI: 1.11-1.84).
The Restriction in Labor Participation was higher in low socioeconomic status (PR = 1.08 95% CI: 1.01-1.16), in people without monthly income (PR = 1.09 95% CI: 1.03-1.16) and in ethnic minorities (PR = 1.05 95% CI: 1.01-1.09).
The Restriction in Participation in Education was greater in those <28 years (PR = 1.45 95% CI: 1.10-1.92), with ≥2 deficiencies in body structures (PR = 1.62 95% CI: 1.28-2.06) and in those who perceive environmental barriers ( PR = 1.54 95% CI: 1.09-2.18).

Conclusion(s): The performance of the social role of the people with disabilities due to traffic accidents is related to the determinants of inequities in health where the most vulnerable and who perceive contextual barriers have greater dependence and restriction in participation.

Implications: This study allows us to recognize that traffic accidents, in addition to representing a high burden of mortality and economic losses, are also responsible for increasing the number of people with disabilities, especially in the population of productive age, in whom body sequelae affect all the dimensions of your life. For the physiotherapist it becomes an input to participate in the formulation of public policies in favor of the prevention of traffic accidents and improve the living conditions of people with disabilities due to traffic accidents.
