Purpose:

This study aimed to explore the perceptions of Filipino primary carers regarding their role and participation in promoting CWD’s active lifestyle.

Methods:

This study utilized a qualitative research design. Focus group discussions were conducted among Filipino primary carers of CWD. Discussions were recorded and transcribed for analysis. Three researchers performed thematic analysis to generate patterns and identify emerging themes.

Results:

Twelve (12) primary carers were interviewed. Two themes emerged from the analysis: critical role of primary carers and factors that impact physical activity promotion. Primary carers recognized their responsibility and identified concrete strategies to promote active lifestyle among CWD. Enabling and hindering factors at the individual, school, community, and societal levels were identified to influence physical activity promotion.

Conclusion(s):

Findings demonstrate Filipino carers’ exceptional regard for the well-being and quality of life of CWD. While they are committed and passionate about promoting an active healthy lifestyle for CWD, results suggest that changes are necessary at all levels of the social system to ensure the effective promotion of CWD health. For example, at the level of carers, misinformation about physical activity is still evident. At the school and community level, environmental and social barriers greatly hinder CWD participation in PA. At the societal level, access to services was identified as a major challenge.

Implications:

The results of this study could inform multisectoral, participatory initiatives at each level of the social system to more effectively promote an active lifestyle for CWD. The physical therapy profession has a significant role to play in this regard through its expertise in adaptive movement and physical activity and advocacy toward a better quality of life for persons with disabilities.
