Background: The Shoulder Rating Questionnaire (SRQ) is a self- administered patient-based survey which includes six scored domains: global assessment, pain, daily activities, recreational and athletic activities, work. Also it provides information about the participant’s occupation, satisfaction level for the shoulder condition and in which areas he or she believes need improvement. There is no valid and reliable Greek version of the SRQ available at present.
Purpose: The aim of the current study was to translate, cultural adapt and test the reliability and validity of the SRQ in patients with shoulder rotator cuff related shoulder pain in acute or chronic phase.
Methods: The SRQ English version was translated and adapted into the Greek language according to international guidelines using forward translation, expert panel synthesis and backward translation procedures. A pilot testing have been made in target population and final version was created. The survey was then conducted in clinical settings by a questionnaire comprising the SRQ and SPADI (Shoulder Pain and Disability Index). A total of 168 (62 males and 74 females) Greek-adult patients with rotator cuff related shoulder pain were recruited from physical therapy clinics. To establish test–retest reliability, the patients were asked to complete the SRQ at initial visit and after 2–3 days. The Greek version of SPADI was also administered once at initial visit. Internal consistency of the translated instrument was measured using Cronbach’s a. An intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess the test–retest reliability of the SRQ. Concurrent validity was measured by correlating the SRQ with the SPADI using Pearson’s correlation coefficient.
Results: The results showed that the SRQ – Greek version has good to excellent internal consistency (Cronbach a=0.99), test-retest reliability (ICC 0.976) and concurrent validity (r>0.9). The standard error of measurement (SEM) and the minimum detectable change (MDC) of the total score were 5.55 and 15.38.
Conclusion(s): The Greek Language Version of the Shoulder Rating Questionnaire is a reliable, valid and responsive instrument that can be used in the evaluation of adult patients with shoulder rotator cuff related disorders in acute or chronic phase and in clinical trials.
Implications:
- The Greek version of the Shoulder Rating Questionnaire has been found to be reliable and valid when used in patients with rotator cuff related shoulder pain in acute or chronic phase.
- The results of the psychometric characteristics were compatible with those of the original English version.
- The SRQ could be applied to a Greek-speaking population to assess symptoms and functional limitations in adult patients with rotator cuff related shoulder pain.
