How Much Is Too Much? (DS-07)

HOW MUCH PHYSIO DOES A PATIENT NEED?

Outline:

Physiotherapy is applied across the globe through different means influenced by various factors. The ultimate goal of treatment is for the patient to return to the community and make a meaningful, interactive contribution. The question becomes: how much physiotherapy does a patient need to achieve this status? When do we discharge the patient from physiotherapy? Should we aim for early discharge or lifelong physiotherapy care? What determines the frequency and duration of treatment? Is funding a determining factor, and should it be? Is relationship building an essential consideration in determining the duration and frequency of treatment and the quality of outcomes? What do we mean by overservicing? Is there under-servicing in public health facilities? Can we accurately predict how many sessions and over what period a patient will need to get better? How do our patients feel about this? What should we do to clearly communicate our recommendations about when we want to see patients again and why as they move towards a better version of themselves?
