HOW IS SLEEP PROFILE OF PHYSICAL THERAPY STUDENTS?

Background: Have a good sleep profile is important for student, however, reduction in the average hours of sleep have been observed. Also, poor sleep has been associated with many problems as deficits in attention, reduction in academic performance, depression, impaired social relationships and poorer health.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the sleep characteristic of Physical Therapy students. Also the morning evening type, day time sleepiness, hour of sleep and anxiety.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with student of physical therapy course. An on-line questionnaire was sent to students after obtaining their written consent: personal factors, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Horne and Ostberg morning-evening questionnaire were applied. Data are presented in mean ± standard deviation.

Results: The research was performed with 106 student. The mean age was 21.90±2.87 years, 78.30% were women, 97.2% were single, 97.2% did not have children, 98.12% were no-smoke, sleep mean time per night were 06:11 ±01:25 hours. The excessive daytime sleepiness and poor sleep was found in 50% of students. STAI-state score were 20.75% low, 55.66% moderate,19.81% elevate and 3.77% highest. STAI-trait score were 14.15% low, 62.26% moderate,20.75% elevate and 2.84% highest. The Horne and Ostberg morning-evening questionnaire score were definitively morning in 1.88%, moderately morning 17.92%, indifferent 67%, moderately evening 12.26% and definitively evening 0.94%.

Conclusion(s): The results showed that the students profile were changing with less time of sleep, half presented daytime sleepiness or poor sleep and moderate anxiety score. However, most of students were classified as indifferent cronobiological characteristic.

Implications: Sleep debt, poor sleep quality and bedtime irregularity could influencing the students quality of life. After this information could be possible develop a sleep hygiene program and give these information back to the student.
