Background: The translation of the European Physiotherapy Guideline for Parkinson´s Disease (EPGPD) to Portuguese was published in 2016 to support the judgments and decisions Portuguese health professionals made during their clinical practice with people with Parkinson´s disease (pwp). Professional associations from 20 European countries joined their forces to develop this Guideline using AGREE and GRADE according to recommendations based on evidences. It is the first Guideline for Parkinson's disease in Portuguese.
Purpose: Implementation the Portuguese version of EPGPD to Brazil and Portugal.
Methods: The Guideline was published and is available for free downloading at www.parkinsonnet.info/euguideline andwww.abneuro.org.br. A printed version in Portuguese of EPGPD was distributed to physiotherapist and physicians in some Congress and courses of neurology and physical therapy in Brazil. Many people showed interest in obtaining the Guideline. Additionally, the authors of the translation decided to collect data to identify what were the main aspects of interest in order to further discuss in courses or dissemination events. By using a questionnaire, a search was done among 665 health professionals concerning knowledge and information about the material; level of interest; how to use; university graduation, specialization and post graduate; how many people with Parkinson they treated per month; how and where they get information from (journals, books); among others.
Results: The implementation process began immediately after the translation and adaptation of EPGPD. The translation process was presented at some Congress (02 Brazilian, 01 International), lectures (05) and meetings (03). From the questionnaires, we obtained 665 replies. These included 266 from physicians, 02 from neurosurgeons, 300 from physiotherapist, 01 from psychologist, 01 from occupational therapist and 25 from medicine students and 70 physiotherapy students. Most of the repliers state they did not know about the guideline (480) and (185) had heard about it but they dinnt use it yet. Those that were aware of its existence (27,8%) also added they didnt feel they knew how to use it. Furthemore, 72,2% showed an interest in obtaining more information.
Conclusion(s): The level of knowledge about the translation of the EGPD is low, the ones who knew the Guideline didnt use because they feel they didnt know how to use it so they may need more information.
Implications: The courses during implementation may be essential to facilitate the implementation process. With further implementation activities, we expected to provide practical help to ensure that health professionals provide equal access for pwp to good quality and specialized care in Brazil and Portugal.
