To evaluate the success of the SEED program for the professional development of PT students around the world.
The 2- to 4-week SEED program included a variety of experiential learning opportunities, e.g., lecture, student experience exchange, team project, clinical observation, cultural activities, and weekly reflections. Interactive lectures were delivered by 8 faculty covering topics of musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and pediatric, evidence-based practice, teamwork, and professionalism. SEED students met with DPT students to exchange learning experiences from different countries. The SEED students observed clinical environments, including intensive care unit, outpatient, and inpatient settings, and participated in cultural activities, such as visiting a farmer’s market and museum. Descriptive analysis and course evaluation were performed to assess the outcome of the program.
From 2017 to 2024, 7 cohorts and 118 international students successfully completed the SEED program either in person (2017-19, 24) or virtually (2021, 22, 23). Of SEED graduates, 9.3% applied to the UNMC DPT program, and 8 were admitted. Student course and instructor evaluations highlight the students’ appreciation of time for reflection, which was new to some students, and the opportunity to share their experiences with other SEED students. Learning in a foreign country and using English as a second language was not easy for some students. Despite these challenges, 92% were satisfied with the learning experience, 83% built new friendships, and 100% planned to share their experience with peers back home.
The UNMC SEED program successfully offered an experiential learning opportunity for international students to improve their knowledge in different learning environments and learn from peers with different cultural backgrounds. It positively elevates graduates’ interests in pursuing professional advancement in physical therapy. The SEED program aligns the purpose of World Physiotherapy to advance our profession and advocate access for all.
Designing a comprehensive summer program with a variety of experiential learning and cultural activities is a key to success. The SEED program not only enriched students’ learning experience, but also allows students to share their experience with peers when they return to their home countries. Students can apply the new knowledge from the SEED program to enhance their clinical practice.
