Purpose:

To develop a questionnaire to evaluate Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice related to Urinary Incontinence and establish the content validity, domain reliability and test-retest reliability of the developed questionnaire. To find out the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice related to Urinary Incontinence in the general population using the developed questionnaire.

Methods:

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice questionnaire on urinary incontinence was developed from the existing literature and in depth interview. Its content validity and internal consistency was established using a Delphi process involving experts in urinary incontinence rehabilitation and Cronbach’s alpha respectively. Test – retest reliability was established using Intraclass correlation coefficient. Validated and internally consistent questionnaire was then administered on 384 people aged 20 years above from general population.

Results:

Content validity of the questionnaire and Cronbach’s alpha was 0.97 and 0.86 respectively. There were 207 (54%) female and 107 (46%) males, mean age was 41.03±11.54 years. In Knowledge domain, 41% not consider it as UI if there is uncontrolled loss of urine daily. In Attitude domain, majority of questions was found to be neutral. In Practice domain, 36% of participants expressed UI as embarrassing problem, difficult to talk about and the majority of them consider it not a serious condition to consult a health professional.

Conclusion(s):

In general population there is inadequate knowledge, attitude and practice of UI, hence the health care professionals should create awareness as an initial measure.

Implications:

Understanding the knowledge,attitude and practice of UI is important for developing and developed countries to plan effective ways of treatment and also to create awareness.
