Purpose:

This study aims to uncover research trends on life-space mobility among the elderly through bibliometric analysis.

Methods:

An electronic search of the Scopus database was conducted from August 2024 to September 2024 using the following keywords: life-space mobility, functional mobility, elderly, geriatrics, and older adults. The data was downloaded from the Scopus database in a CSV file format and analyzed using Visualization of Similarities Viewer (VosViewer).

Results:

Most articles were published in 2021 and 2024 (11.7%, n=20). The Aging Clinical and Experimental Research Journal published the majority of the articles (2.23%, n=4) with 92 citations. The United States contributed significantly to articles related to life-space mobility.

Conclusion(s):

There is a growing interest in the exploration of life-space mobility for the elderly. There is a diverse body of disciplines that took an interest in the research topics. However, few authors are producing noteworthy articles that can contribute to our current knowledge of life-space mobility. High-income and middle-income countries are also active in examining the environmental safety and mobility of older adults which provided limited information on the life space mobility of elderly living in  middle and low income countries.

Implications:

Physical therapy researchers should be interested in navigating life space mobility as part of our rehabilitation program. As one of the leading healthcare workers in the geriatric population, we should investigate the current state of these special groups' living environments in order to provide evidence-based interventions and modifications, as well as to advocate for health and urban development policies that promote the mobility of the elderly.
