Background: Leg muscle cramps (LMCs) are one of the most common problems in the third trimester of pregnancy, experienced by up to half of pregnant women. The prevalence worldwide is estimated between 30% to 55% of pregnant women. However, Limited studies explored the living experience of leg cramps during pregnancy and how it affects their lives from the first person’s perspective.

Purpose: The study aimed to explore pregnant women’s living experience of LMCs during pregnancy and how it impacts their daily lives. Moreover, the study aimed to understand the challenges and modifications of these pregnant women.

Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews and a thematic analysis approach. We recruited ten women during pregnancy who were experiencing LMCs. Their responses were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim, and translated to English before analysis. A thematic analysis approach was used to extract the main themes and subthemes from the data.

Results: Ten pregnant women were interviewed until data saturation was reached. The age range of the participant was 20-45 years. All participants were in the third trimester, except one was in the second trimester. The main themes generated were descriptions of cramps, impact on participation in functional activities, psychological impact, overall quality of life and well-being, and adaptations.

Conclusions: The study provided a wealth of knowledge about LMCs during pregnancy and their impact. Such interpretation should assist healthcare practitioners in directing appropriate services to pregnant women with LMCs to provide better healthcare.

Implications: Clinical education and management for pregnant women about LMCs are important. Also, healthcare providers should consider discussing treatment and prevention strategies with pregnant women. Future research needs to investigate valid and reliable assessment methods for LMC's impact and investigate effective prevention and treatment strategies.
