Description: Physical therapy in mental health care and psychiatry has not been acknowledged yet in all countries. The aim of this focussed symposium is to discuss the potential value of physical therapy in mental health care and the inclusion of mental health in physical therapy education and in clinical practice. At the same time, this symposium illustrates new developments in physical therapy methods and applications in the fields of mental health and psychiatry, including innovative and effective strategies to address today's complex health challenges. The symposium is focussed as well on effects of exercise in prevention and management of mental illness, body and movement awareness in work-related posttraumatic stress disorders, identifying and addressing psychological factors in chronic low back pain and interventions to improve mental health skills of physical therapy students. In the discussion, topics for future interactions and initiatives in regard of research and clinical practice will be explored.
