THE MOBILE AND COMPUTER USE - A PILOT STUDY

Background: Sleep has an important role in human life. It can be influenced specially by social, psychological and physical conditions. Change in sleep conditions could alter sleep quality.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe university student characteristic and the sleep quality and quantity.

Methods: Physical Therapist students, both sex, age between 18 and 25 years, were invited to be volunteer. An questionnaire with socio demographic aspects, time and period of computer and mobile use and the Pittsburg questionnaire was send by e-mail to students after the consent. Data are presented in mean, standard deviation and percentage.

Results: 58 Physical Therapist student answered a quiz, 72.5% were women, 94.8% were single, 96.5% don´t have children, only one student smoke, 55% are sedentary, the computer was used by 4.7±2hour per day, 94.8% preferred spend their time on computer during the night, 56.8% don´t do pause during the period of computer using. The mobile was used by 9.1 ± 4.77 hours per day, 84.48% preferred spend their time on mobile during the night, 75.8% referred be tired during the day, 75.8% were classified as bad sleep by Pittsburg scale.

Conclusion(s): The results suggested that the student are spending a lot of time in front of computer or using the mobile, especially during the night. Moreover, they are sleeping less time and were classified as bad sleep.

Implications: The present study should be highlighted as an example of the influence of mobile and computer use in Physical Therapist student routine. It could be harmful for their life. This study is the initial phase of a big project that try to characterize student profile to plan strategies minimize the influence of mobile and computer in their life.
