ONLINE LEARNING IN PHYSIOTHERAPY EDUCATION AND HEALTH ALLIED PROFESSION DURING COVID -19 PANDEMIC: A SCOPING REVIEW

Background: Education amidst this time opted to continue through online learning. The researchers identified and mapped the impact of online learning during Covid -19 pandemic especially in the allied health profession.

Purpose: The researchers used the scoping review (ScR) by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) to map and summarize the different online learning delivery mode amidst the COVID 19 pandemic utilized by the different courses offered under the allied medical professions in global context. With the utilization of ScR, a policy map was used as basis for the utilization of hybrid flexible learning approach that is tailored to learners, teachers, and school administrators that can be used by the College of Physical Therapy and other allied medical professions.

Methods: A scoping review (ScR) methodology guided by Arksey and O”Malley 2016 was used. Comprehensive research was based on online learning were conducted in Medline, EBSCohost, Google scholars, Physiopedia, Pedro.“Online learning, “Covid 19 pandemic”, “physiotherapy” and “health allied professions” are the keywords used for secondary search. The JBI extracting tools was applied as a screening tool for the selected full text resource by two reviewers. It is further used to identify and map the perceptions, advantages, disadvantages of online learning based on the selected articles reviewed.

Results: There is a total of 2459 titles at full abstract levels were screened and among this, fifty-six full articles were chosen: nineteen cross sectional studies, fifteen qualitative studies, eight survey questionnaire studies, five mixed method studies, four systematic reviews, one case control, one cohort study, one quasi-experimental, one Scoping Review, and one Randomized Control Trial.Among all those articles, thirty-nine of which are from Asia, eight are from Europe, five are from Africa, three are from Australia and one from USA.
Articles were categorized based on its new learning circumstances, experiences, perceived advantages, and drawbacks in the delivery of curriculum in Physical therapy and other allied medical professions in new normal academic landscape.

Conclusions: Covid 19 Pandemic created a new trajectory in the delivery of curriculum in theprogram of studyin Physiotherapy and other allied medical professions. The different factors that are identified and mapped can be used as a benchmark in creating a hybrid flexible learning to the paradigm shift in education.

Implications: Thisscoping review will helpacademician to develop a curriculum that is learner centered, and outcome based. It may also help researchers to implement a program of study that can be flexible to all types of learners that will guarantee better earning outcomes in terms of knowledge,skills competencies, and appropriate ethics concerning their professional practices.
