Purpose:

This study aims to develop an original pulmonary rehabilitation system based on virtual reality for pulmonary rehabilitation therapy and teaching.

Methods:

This system consists of three contents: XR health guidance and training system, AI digital virtual instructor and AI-assisted training data management platform. XR health guidance and training system can achieve respiratory function monitoring and breathing training guidance. AI digital virtual instructor focus on dynamic display of anatomical structures. AI-assisted data management platform was developed for training data analysis. The system was applied in pulmonary rehabilitation therapy and teaching.

Results:

The system was applied in patients with cervicothoracic spinal cord injury. After 4 weeks, the intervention group had significant improvements in MIP, PIF, FVC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, and PEF compared with the control group. The system was also applied in pulmonary rehabilitation teaching, students' critical thinking and innovation abilities were improved significantly. In addition, the system was presented at World VR Conference 2021-2023.

Conclusion(s):

The system improved clinical efficacy and teaching effect significantly. The system improved pulmonary function of patients with spinal cord injury. The system can stimulate students' innovative thinking in scientific research and improve students' clinical practice ability.

Implications:

The system improved clinical efficacy of pulmonary physiotherapy and teaching effect of physiotherapy students significantly.
