Purpose:

The primary aim of this study was the cross-cultural adaptation of the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ) (Monnin D & Perneger TV, 2002) which concerns the assessment of patients’ satisfaction with health services provided in private physical therapy clinics. Secondary aim was the investigation of the correlation of the PSQ subscales (reception, treatment procedures, facilities, overall experience) with social, mental, economic and quality of life (QoL) variables.

Methods:

Cross-cultural adaptation in the Greek language (PSQ_Gr) was developed through forward-backward translation, final review, and pre-final version according to international guidelines (Arafat, S. et al., 2016). The final PSQ_Gr was distributed twice within 2 weeks apart to patients receiving treatment at private physiotherapy clinics in the five regions of the country. At baseline, each patient completed a visual analog scale (VAS), the Short Form-36 General Physical and Mental Health Status Questionnaire (SF-36), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) for the assessment of pain, quality of life, and anxiety and depression, respectively. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the PSQ_Gr were examined with Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), respectively. Additional correlations were assessed using Spearman (ρ) correlation.

Results:

Responses were collected from 150 patients over 18 years old. Results showed high internal consistency for the total score of the PSQ_Gr (Cronbach's a=0.902) and for each subscale: reception a= 0.846, treatment procedures a=0.880, and facilities a=0.806). Moderate test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.707) was found for the total score of the PSQ_Gr. No correlations were found with the socio-economic, mental, and physical function parameters.

Conclusion(s):

The PSQ-Gr is a practical, valid, and reliable tool for assessing physiotherapy services in the private physical therapy setting in Greece.

Implications:

Validated physical therapy patient satisfaction assessment tools is crucial to be used in the private healthcare setting for improving the quality of health services as well as the QoL of patients. PSQ-Gr use can be recommended with Greek-speaking outpatient populations.
