Rehabilitation Following Neuroinvasive disease Complications After West Nile Fever: A Series of Case Reports

Purpose:

To monitor the course and outcomes of rehabilitation for these patients during the subacute hospitalization period.To monitor the course and outcomes of rehabilitation for these patients during the subacute hospitalization period.

Methods:

Data from medical charts was collected and included demographic data, functional assessments (Motor and Cognitive FIM, Barthel Index, Berg Balance Scale, DGI), and balance tests at three time points during hospitalization: upon admission, during the stay, and at discharge. All patients received a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program including Physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological consultation.

Results:

Data was collected from eight patients, comprising six men and two women, aged 50-70 (average age 69), from a single geographic area who were admitted to the hospital in June and July 2024. The demographic data of the patients and the functional improvement during hospitalization will be presented. The clinical expression in each patient varied and included ataxia, hemiparesis, and polyneuropathy. In addition to motor impairments, cognitive deficits were also observed. All patients achieved functional improvement, but at this time point (most are still in rehabilitation), they had not yet returned to their previous level of function. Continued follow-up will be conducted until their discharge, with final results to be presented at the conference.

Conclusion(s):

The patients presented a wide range of neurological symptoms and showed functional and cognitive improvements. A multidisciplinary rehabilitation program is required for maximizing patients' potential.

Implications:

There are few studies on this topic, most of which are case reports. Given the scarcity of cases requiring rehabilitation, it is important to document these patients and expand knowledge regarding rehabilitation outcomes and its impact.
