Background: Smart garment system is efficient for upper body movement monitoring during simple tasks. There is a lack amount of literature that smart textile garment are reliable and valid for shoulder girdle motion assessment.

Purpose: To examine the reliability and validity of the DAid Smart-Shirt for shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment.

Methods: Quantitative experimental study design. Twenty-two female volunteers (age 24.2 (SD 3.3), body mass index 19.3 (SD0.5) were recruited. As assessment tool there were Nike ® Pro Cool compression garment with sew up textile strain sensors, developed in Riga Technical University (Latvia); 2D movement video analysis software (Quintic Biomechanics v26, UK). Cronbach alpha coefficient, Interclass Correlation Coefficient (95% CI) were calculated to assess the within session test-retest reliability, Bland-Altman analysis were used to determine validity.

Results: Right side shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment results within volunteers: Cronbach alpha coefficient α ≥ 0.9 (min 0.9, max 0.99), ICC (95% CI) min 0.90, max 0.99, left side shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment results: Cronbach alpha coefficient α ≥ 0.9 (min 0.91, max 0.99), ICC (95% CI) min 0.91, max 0.99 within volunteers. Bland - Altman analysis presents, that smart textile garment left side shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment results are more valid than right side shoulder motion assessment results.

Conclusion(s): Smart textile garment is reliable and valid for shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment. Smart textile garment should be customized and appropriate for body, to assess shoulder girdle motion. Future research should find out options for shoulder gridle protraction motion assessment with DAid smart shirt and smart shirt application influence on clinical outcomes for patients with shoulder girdle problems.

Implications: DAid Smart shirt can be used as effective assisting device for shoulder girdle elevation motion assessment in addition to conventional physiotherapy. DAid Smart shirt can be effective in therapy process, because permanent presence of physiotherapist is not needful.
