Background: For decades we have established the use of scales, tests, batteries and other assessment tools to characterize abilities such as proprioception in people. Although there are different tests that assess proprioception applied in clinical practice, there are not specific valid and reliable tests for special populations, such as those with amputations. The BEPAT, built by the research group in kinesiotherapy of the National University aims to evaluate the proprioception of people with transtibial amputation in the static and dynamic components; proprioceptive evaluation is performed by the valuation of 14 items, divided into seven different tests.
Purpose: To determine the reliability of the Battery Proprioceptive Assessment (BEPAT) for patients with transtibial amputations, at the Military Central Hospital (MCH) Bogota Colombia.
Methods: The BEPAT was applied to patients with transtibial amputation with traumatic origin, who were in the process of rehabilitation at MCH, by students last semester of physiotherapy with a training for the application of the same. Sampling was performed using a non-probabilistic convenience system, considering inclusion and exclusion criteria defined in the investigation. The BEPAT was applied in a test-retest form.
Results: Using the RV coefficient Y Escoufier as a measure of similarity, an inter- rater reliability of 0.99 and intra-rater of 0.78 were found.
Conclusion(s): BEPAT has a very high inter-rater and high intra-rater reliability. There was good agreement between the observations made by the two evaluators in each of the two tests. For that reason the battery is recommended as a reliable evaluation instrument for patients with transtibial amputations.
Implications: We recommend using BEPAT, for assessing proprioception in patients with transtibial amputations.
