Background: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is characterized by atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the lower and upper extremities. Intermittent claudication is the classic symptom of peripheral arterial disease. Walking Impairment Questionnaire (WIQ) is the questionnaire used to detect functional inactivity in Peripheral Arterial Disease patients. Reliability of the Walking Impairment Questionnaire has not been studied in Indian population.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to translate the walking impairment questionnaire into the Gujarati language and to investigate the reliability.

Methods: The WIQ was developed by Dr. Regensteiner in 1990. After the permission of the author, translation ofthe original questionnaire was performed according to WHO guidelines for Process of Translation and Adaptation of Instruments. 148 subjects with Peripheral Arterial Disease were included in study. Gujarati Walking Impairment Questionnaire was administered during 1st visit and 7 days later by telephonic interview to assess reliability of Gujarati Walking Impairment Questionnaire.

Results: Gujarati Walking Impairment Questionnaire showed excellent test-retest reliability as evidenced by high Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC=0.94, P=0.000) (P 0.05) and high Internal consistency (α=0.97).

Conclusion(s): Gujarati version of the Walking Impairment Questionnaire has showed an excellent reliability and is an adequate for evaluation of functional impairments of subjects with Peripheral Arterial Disease.

Implications: Use of Gujarati version of Walking Impairment Questionnaire can be recommended in clinical settings and future outcome studies in Gujarati speaking subjects with Peripheral Arterial Disease.
