Background: The high number of children received in rehabilitation for obstetrical brachial plexus palsy led us to seek to identify risk factors, in order to propose solutions.

Purpose: To determine risk factors for obstetric brachial plexus palsy in the maternity unit at the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital in Lomé (Togo).

Methods: This is a prospective study of patients with obstetrical brachial plexus palsy in the maternity unit at the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital unit from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2014.

Results: A total of 25 patients were recruited, 68% of whom were male, with a sex ratio of 2.1. 56% have a birth weight greater than 4000g, 72% with a size between 46-52 cm. 72% have a cranial perimeter greater than 36 cm. The seat presentation at birth is 10%, 72% cephalic presentation and 18% shoulder presentation. The obstructed labor is 88%, with 96% vaginally. 10% of mothers are diagnosed with diabetes, and 56% of mothers were primiparous, 80% over 40 years of age.

Conclusion(s): The risk factors for obstetric palsy of the brachial plexus are multiple. Parameters related to the child, childbirth and mother, some factors related to pregnancy and the mother´s condition are to be monitored. We must therefore establish a communication to avoid the occurrence and especially the increase of cases in our centers.

Implications: This study allowed us to identify and communicate with birth attendants and midwives on education and accompaniment of famines for prevention.
