Purpose:

Aim of the study was cross-cultural adaptation of “Self-Efficacy for Home Exercise Program Scale” into Gujarati language and to find validity and reliability of Gujarati version.

Methods:

The methodological study was conducted at SBB college of Physiotherapy, Ahmedabad. The adaptation involved steps based on the method suggested by WHO – forward translation (by two experts in Gujarati language, backward translation, creation of provisional Gujarati version and reliability and validity testing of final version. For validity testing, reviews in the form of 5-point Likert scale were noted (5-strongly agree, 4- agree, 3- neither agree nor disagree, 2- disagree, 1- strongly disagree) from an expert panel of 5 members was analyzed. Content validity index both item specific (I-CVI) and scale specific (S-CVI) were found based on reviews from an expert panel. For test-retest reliability, performance of scale with ten patients with musculoskeletal problems was assessed and interclass coefficient (ICC) was calculated.

Results:

I-CVI for each question ranged from 0.48 to 0.92. S-CVI was found to be 0.8. ICC for single measures is 0.92 (0.73-0.98, 95% confidence interval) and Cronbach’s alpha was 0.96 for Gujarati adaptation of SEHEPS scale.

Conclusion(s):

Self-Efficacy for Home Exercise Program Scale in Gujarati language has good validity and reliability and can be used to measure self-efficacy in Gujarati understanding population.

Implications:

Gujarati version of SEHEPS can be used to evaluate self-efficacy for exercise in Gujarati speaking population. This will help physiotherapists understand confidence of the patient in performing home exercises and maybe understand reasons for non-adherence. Methods to increase self efficacy may also be worked upon.
