The aim of our study is to examine the demographics of salaried practice in France in 2024 and its development.
A descriptive study using a self-administered questionnaire was carried out between 3 April and 13 May 2024. The questionnaire was distributed using digital tools (email, social networks, website display) to all establishments employing at least 1 physiotherapist listed on the Ordre's register. The data collected was used to calculate (1) the rate of unfilled positions overall and as a function of the median value of the number of budgeted FTEs, (2) the rate of positions currently filled and to be filled following retirements between now and 1 January 2029 and the overall turnover rate of professionals.
141 questionnaires were fully completed and analysed. The results show an overall rate of unfilled positions of 16.6% for all establishments (13.4% for establishments recruiting 7 FTE or more, 37.8% for establishments recruiting less than 7 FTE). The rate of vacancies due to retirement by 2029 is 13.4%, and the overall turnover rate is 65.6% for 2023.
These high rates of unfilled posts and turnover of professionals are a cause for concern and could result in a significant weakening of the teams in place, a deterioration in the transmission of knowledge to younger staff and a loss of quality in the care of complex patients in the establishment.
At this stage, there is nothing to enable us to measure the effects of direct access or of the new health policies on the salaried practice of physiotherapy in France.
