Background: “Culture is a socially constructed attribute of organizations that serves as social glue to binding an organization together.” (Cameron & Quinn, 2006) Currently, no study exists looking at organizational culture within acute care based physical therapy departments.
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to analyze the current and preferred organizational culture amongst Physical Therapists (PTs) currently employed at Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH), of the Northwell Health System.
Methods: In efforts to maintain anonymity and comfort level of responses, doctoral level physical therapy students from Dominican College administered, collected, and collated data via hard copies, along with informed consent from all participating physical therapists.
Results: The analysis of the OCAI of PTs currently employed at Lenox Hill Hospital would prefer a change to their current organizational culture, favoring clan and adhocracy culture over market and hierarchy. Leadership of the department was provided with data and created an employee engagement strategy around employee preferences.
Conclusion(s): Employee engagement survey results conducted by an outside national agency showed a statistically significant improvement. Clinical leaders should continue to assess and adjust to the desired leadership style as best equipped to increase employee engagement. Increased engagement is significant to overall organizational performance.
Implications: Hospital leaders should consider utilization of the OCAI in healthcare populations as a tool to potentially identify engagement strategies.
