Purpose:

This study aims to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Body Perception Questionnaire (BPQ) through the Turkish translation of the questionnaire and the intercultural adaptation.

Methods:

The study includes 295 participants (175 healthy, 120 anxiety). The mean age of the study subjects was 32,15 ± 14,11years. Beaton's 6-step procedure was used for translation and intercultural adaptation. The study includes 175 healthy participants (93 women, 82 men) and 120 participants with anxiety (87 women, 33 men). Beaton's 6-step procedure was used for translation and intercultural adaptation. After the steps of the procedure were completed, the questionnaire was finalized. The tests were carried out to measure the internal consistency and the validity and reliability analyses showed that the BPQ measure was found to be highly reliable. Test–retest reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients in patients 2 weeks apart.

Results:

The Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient was 0,942. Internal consistency of BPQ subscales ranged from 0,838 to 0,980. Intraclass correlation coefficient of body awareness subscale of BPQ was found to be 0,802 (p0,001); supradiaphragmatic reactivity subscale of BPQ was found to be 0,608 (p0,01); and subdiaphragmatic reactivity subscale of BPQ was found to be 0,717 (p0,001) in the test-retest results. It has been observed that the scale items could be grouped under 3 factors in the Varimax Rotation Exploratory Factor Analysis and the BPQ variance could be explained by 63.56%. The repeatability and the temporal invariance of BPQ have been studied through biweekly tests and repeated test applications and the invariance was found out to be on a good level. It was found that BPQ is a sensitive measure distinguishing the healthy people and people with anxiety (p0,05).

Conclusion(s):

As a result, it was found that BPQ is a valid and reliable questionnaire in Turkish that can be used to evaluate the body perception of the adults.

Implications:

It is a scale that will help understand the patient's body perception and prepare a treatment plan in many musculoskeletal problems or psychosocial situations encountered in physiotherapy. We believe that the validity and reliability of the body perception questionnaire in the native language in our country will contribute to many professionals working in the health field and shed light on the problems for better treatment outcomes.
