Representatives of 15 member organisations in the Asia Western Pacific (AWP) region took the opportunity to meet and discuss a number of issues on 25 September 2024, in Bali, Indonesia.
Although representatives of 21 member organisations had registered to attend the region’s general meeting, representatives from six member organisations were unable to attend and the meeting was inquorate. However, those who were present welcomed the chance to meet in-person and exchange ideas and perspectives about the physiotherapy profession.
The AWP region executive committee had developed a plan to offer a bursary programme to enable representatives of member organisations from low and lower middle income countries/territories to attend future in-person general meetings in the region. The plan was presented to those attending the meeting and was met with enthusiasm and support.
After the meeting, the AWP region congress took place, 26-28 September 2024, in Bali, Indonesia. The theme of the congress was collaboration and transformation towards sustainable physiotherapy practice. 655 participants from 31 countries/territories contributed to the success of the congress via the congress organising committee, volunteers, exhibition vendors and registered attendees.
Marco Pang, AWP region chair and member of 香港物理治療學會/Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, said: "The AWP region congress was a tremendous success, thanks to Ikatan Fisioterapi Indonesia/Indonesian Physiotherapy Association. The presentations were inspiring, but what made the congress all the more special was the clear demonstration of unity of the physiotherapy community across the region."
The location of the next AWP general meeting is currently being discussed. Participants at the general meeting and congress shared their excitement and enthusiasm that the next event in the AWP region would be World Physiotherapy Congress 2025, 29-31 May 2025, in Tokyo, Japan.
A World Physiotherapy board meeting also took place in Bali on 25 September 2024. Michel Landry, World Physiotherapy president, gave welcome comments to the AWP region general meeting. He, and other members of the board, later joined participants for the beginning of the AWP region congress.
