World Physiotherapy and the Japanese Physical Therapy Association (JPTA) have jointly urged the adoption of international standards in physiotherapy education in Japan.
Earlier this month, JPTA president Hideyuki Saito, alongside World Physiotherapy president Michel Landry and CEO Sidy Ousmane Dieye, held high-level meetings in Tokyo with Japan’s Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, Fukuoka Takamaro, and the State Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Takebe Arata. Together, they advocated for reforms to align physiotherapy curricula with global benchmarks.

This call to action follows a landmark achievement: Iryo Sosei University became the first Japanese institution accredited under World Physiotherapy’s international education standards. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to strengthening Japan’s physiotherapy workforce in response to the growing healthcare needs of an aging population.
