The town of Pozuelo marked the first anniversary of her death by holding a ceremony to unveil a plaque, naming a children’s playground and a gazebo in her memory.
Lorena, 38, was working with a 21-year-old man living with polio when he fired a single shot which resulted in a chest wound. She was taken to the NATO military base hospital at Camp Marmal, but died from the injury. She had been working as a humanitarian aid worker in Afghanistan for more than a year, and had previously worked in Ethiopia, Malawi, the Sahara, and Tanzania.
