World Physiotherapy welcomes ceasefire in Israel and Gaza and calls for protection of healthcare professionals and ongoing provision of humanitarian aid

World Physiotherapy has welcomed the recent ceasefire between Israel and Gaza, emphasising the urgent need to protect healthcare professionals and facilities, and calls for adherence to international humanitarian law and the safeguarding of healthcare professionals.

Highlighting the critical importance of a peaceful resolution to the conflict, Michel Landry, World Physiotherapy president, said: "We are saddened by news of the physiotherapists killed during the conflict and we stand in unwavering solidarity with our families, friends, and colleagues on all sides. In the strongest possible terms, we advocate for a peaceful resolution in order to protect the innocent and most vulnerable, and to ensure access to care for all people affected by the conflict.

“We have maintained contact with our member organisations in the region and have continued to offer support to them and their members, advocating for the protection of healthcare facilities and personnel.

“It is important to recognise that compliance with international humanitarian law is not only a legal obligation but also a moral imperative to uphold the principles of humanity and dignity in times of conflict."

The ceasefire agreement, which includes initial hostage and prisoner releases and the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, has been welcomed by the international community. However, the need for sustained, long-term support and humanitarian relief remains critical.

As the ceasefire brings a temporary reprieve for people in the region, World Physiotherapy remains committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of all those affected by the conflict, working towards a peaceful and sustainable resolution.

In 2024 World Physiotherapy, as part of WHPA, called for the safe passage of medical care and humanitarian aid, ensuring that healthcare infrastructures such as hospitals, clinics, and ambulances are not targeted. This is reflected in World Physiotherapy’s endorsement of the ethical principles of health care in times of armed conflict and other emergencies arising from the healthcare in danger campaign
