The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) endorses the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and encourages its member organisations to promote its implementation and monitoring. 1 The Convention promotes, protects and ensures the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities and promotes respect for their inherent dignity. It sets out in detail the rights of persons with disabilities and a code of implementation. The Convention and its Optional Protocol were adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2006 and opened for signature in March 2007. The Convention entered into force on 3 April 2008 after receiving its 20th ratification with the Optional Protocol entering into force 30 days later.
