HEALTH LITERACY: WHAT DO PATIENTS NEED?

Outline:

As health care services has moved away from the approach of “physio knows best” to become more patient-centred, health literacy has come into the focus. Factors like religion, culture, environment, education influence the patients’ engagement with information on their conditions. Patients at times drive the demand for healthcare presenting at point of care with healthcare information at hand. This session will explore how to support health literacy amongst our patients and how to manage extremes on either end of the spectrum.

Objectives:
  1. Define what health literacy is
  2. Discuss how to support health literacy
  3. Identify barriers and facilitators of health literacy
  4. Identify strategies to improve health literacy
